The zCAT Takes Portability to Another Level

Lightweight, automated and completely wireless, the world’s first truly mobile DCC CMM can be deployed anytime, anywhere.

Newton, Massachusetts - Sept. 1, 2015 - Fowler High Precision, globally recognized as a leading supplier of high-quality inspection, leveling, control and calibration equipment, announced today the world’s first truly portable direct computer control coordinate measuring machine (DCC CMM) called the zCAT. The zCAT can be deployed anywhere it is needed, whether on the shop floor at the point of production, inside a part, outside a part, or even on a conference table or desk.

One of the zCAT’s most unique qualities is its portability. Weighing only 30 lbs., the zCAT is a compact, self-contained CMM unit that has everything a user needs to take automated, complex 2D and 3D measurements in the field. The zCAT stands 620 mm tall and 420 mm wide with a base of 172 mm.

Rotary motion as the primary axis allows the zCAT to achieve its small footprint. A rotary encoder in the base enables 360-degree rotation, so that parts can be nested all along the device’s perimeter. Additionally, an industry standard Renishaw TP20 probe system rotates 360 degrees and the horizontal stylus can spin and orient to the part for maximum flexibility.

Completely wireless, the zCAT is powered by a 10.8 volt lithium ion battery, providing precise, accurate measurements in the field for up 4 hours before requiring a charge. A power supply charger is included for quick and easy recharges during or between use. In addition, with its WiFi capability, each zCAT has its own network, allowing the device to automatically transfer data in whatever form is desired, including an Excel spreadsheet.

Adding to its small footprint, the zCAT’s intuitive, icon-driven touchscreen about the size of a smartphone creates a streamlined, user-friendly operation. Users can employ the built-in ControlCAT geometric measurement software for simple measurements or expand measurement capabilities and lower training time even further with the zCAT’s open architecture I++ Software interface, which works seamlessly with third-party 3D metrology software.

Direct computer control operation translates to high accuracies that rival much larger and more expensive conventional CMMs. Coupled with its portable nature, the zCAT’s DCC operation makes production more efficient while greatly reducing user error because of its automation. Operators teach the zCAT what they want to measure and then the zCAT takes over.

By being able to take the zCAT to the part instead of taking the part to the zCAT, users save time and money otherwise spent waiting for a dedicated operator to complete measurements in another location. Additionally, because training time is minimal and done on site, every employee can be trained to use the zCAT and the same person making the part can measure the part.

Due to the size and weight of the zCAT, service calls and maintenance also are quick and efficient. The zCAT comes in a reusable shipping container that can be easily packed and shipped back to the manufacturer for service, instead of waiting to schedule an in-house service call.

Fowler High Precision is currently taking orders for the zCAT. This truly portable DCC CMM comes completely assembled in the U.S., and is scheduled to ship in September 2015.
